Há qualquer peso sobre o que me dizes,
qualquer intenção além de ferir-me
quebrar-me a mim
e à minha alma em pedaços tão pequenos

que não mais façam sentido juntas
todas as partes.

Incluem-se em mim
uma a uma as tuas angústias
ainda durmo enquanto sobe
as tuas ladeiras
nos meus sonhos
vejo o teu percurso,

vejo-te afastando-se
até perderem-se de mim
os teus olhos

até que não seja mais possível
ver-te com esses olhos meus.

There is any weight on these things you tell me
any intention other than causing me to suffer,
other than breaking me down
and my soul
in pieces so little
they make no sense
put back together.

Your angst in contained in me
I'm still asleep
while you go up your hills
in my dreams I see the path you make,

I see you disappearing in the distance
your eyes slowly losing me
until I can't see you either
with these eyes of mine.

Essas palavras respiram
para te dizerem uma verdade.

Foram escolhidas
entre todas as outras
porque têm o peso
e o tamanho certo

para suportarem o enrijecimento
imposto pelos anos
quer vivam escondidas em mim
ou caminhem livres pelo teu corpo.

A progressão da vida
pode render-lhes desgaste

mas hoje são tão claras
quanto quando ainda podia
lê-las diretamente na minha pele,

estendem-se diante dos teus olhos
tão honestas
quanto o universo.

Amo-te,
eis a minha verdade
que existe voluntária e
independe do teu sim.

Quando minhas palavras respiram,
eu posso também.

These words take a deep breath
to tell you a truth.

They've been chosen
among all the others
because they have the right
weight and height

to avoid the stiffening
imposed by the passing of years
either locked down inside me
or moving freely along your body.

Life's progress might
wear them off

but today they are as clear
as before when you could still
read them straight from my skin,

they expand before your eyes
and they do so in a way
as honest as the universe.

I love you,
this is my truth
it exists voluntarily
and does not depend on
your positive response.

When my words breathe,
I do too.

Das coisas presenteadas
ao abandono:

trinta noites de sono
no mês passado

um e-mail
não respondido

o pretérito imperfeito
do subjuntivo

a dor do último
abraço

ver-me
com teus olhos.

Of things offered as gifts
to abandonment:

thirty nights of sleep
last month

a not responded
e-mail

the Subjunctive
Imperfect Past

the pain contained
in our very last hug

seeing myself
through your eyes.

Um dia sem o teu nome.
Ouvi Pedros e Bernardos,
Eduardos e Maurícios -
Nenhuma trombeta.

Teus sons agora misturam-se à floresta:
o choro segue o curso manso do rio,
o grito aguarda sob um barranco,
o riso namora a copa de um medronheiro.

É novembro, os dias são mais longos
espero-te nas horas claras,
não me encontras.
Deito-me com o teu silêncio.

A day without your name.
I hear Peters, and Bernards,
Edwards and Maurices
but no trumpet.

Your sounds are now part of the forest:
your crying follows the quiet flow of the river,
your scream is asleep down a gully,
your laughter dreams about the top of a strawberry tree.

It's November, days are longer
I wait for you in the light hours,
you don't find me.
I go to bed with your silence.

Adormeço
cansada dos dias,
de acreditar;

de ver estender-se
à minha volta
um abismo de tempo.

Quando estávamos juntos
o tempo nunca houve.
Enquanto explorava as minhas gavetas,

enquanto descobria os
espaços silenciosos da nossa varanda,
enquanto você dormia,

eu me perdi nas tuas horas.

I fall asleep
too tired for another day,
too tired to believe;

to continue watching
as an abyss of time
extends in every direction
around me.

When we were together
time was non-existent.

While you were exploring my drawers
or discovering silent spots in our yard,
while you were sleeping

I lost myself  in your hours.

Não se ocupe
dos espaços vazios
ou da maneira como coisas e pessoas

se movem suspensas
de um lado para o outro
na ausência de amor.

O mundo fica tão vasto
que parece não mais ser possível
carregá-lo nos olhos.

O ar fica tão pesado que é
mais fácil permanecer imóvel
e aproveitar o silêncio.

Eis aqui um segredo:
Um dia você acorda e
essas impressões terão caído por terra

e você caminhará entre elas
sem memória alguma
de como começaram,
de como terminaram.

Do not bother with the empty spaces
and the way things and people move
to and fro in suspension
in the absence of love.

The world grows so vast
one can no longer carry it in the eyes,

The air grows so heavy
one would rather sit still
and use some silence,

(Here's a secret:
one morning you'll wake up,
and these impressions will have fallen to the ground
meaningless
and you'll move through them with
no memory of their ending or beginning.)

Meus olhos perdem o Norte.
O coração aponta para o Sudoeste.

Onde você sobe e desce morros
de bicicleta
procurando a sombra das árvores
que são tuas,
perdido em pensamento,
solfejando uma música
que talvez eu conheça.

Começo a medir saudade
em quilômetros,
a pensar a vida em rios,
a estudar mapas para descobrir
quantas cidades nos separam,
quantas estradas ainda nos unem.

My eyes lose North.
This heart now points to Southwest.

Where you go up and down hills
on a bike
searching for the shade of your own trees
lost in thought while
humming a song I might know.

I start to measure loneliness
in kilometers
to think of our lives as the lives of rivers,
to study maps to discover
how many cities there are between us,
how many roads can bring us together.

O que quer que eu ame,
o destino rouba de mim

- além de cuidado,
proximidade
e esse coração.

Minhas memórias,
reduzidas a frases mínimas,
eu as repito

para fingir que tive um passado,
para fingir que tenho fé no futuro.

Quando não há pelo que esperar,
vou para a cama chorando
e acordo líquida.

Atravessa-me
como um rio
a mudança.

Whatever I love,
destiny steals from me

- and care, closeness,
and this heart.

My memories, reduced to
minimalistic sentences,

I repeat them to myself
to pretend I had a past,

to pretend I have some faith
in the future.

When I have nothing to wait for,
I go to bed crying and wake up
fluid.

It flows through me
like a river,
change.

Gosto de pensar
que haverá algum tipo de amor para mim
no fim do mundo

antes de tudo ficar tão quieto
e escuro
e não ser mais capaz de ver
a tua mão na minha ou
ouvir o meu coração no teu.

Há um momento entre perder
alguém no caminho
e descobrir que as perdas se repetem
em que me pergunto por que escrevo.

Porque escrevo o teu nome no ar,
ele é levado pelo vento.
Não importa o meu lugar no universo,
continuo aqui sozinha.

Porque quando for preciso
deixar para trás o mundo que criamos,
se decidir ficar com alguma lembrança minha,
espero que seja isso.

I want to believe
there is some sort of
love for me
in the end of the world

before everything goes
so dark and silent that I can't
see my hand in yours or
hear your heart in mine.

There is a moment between
losing someone for the path
and discovering that losses loop,
I wonder why I write.

Because I write your name in the air,
the winds carries it away.
No matter where I stand in the universe,
I'm alone.

Because when time comes
to leave the world we invented behind,
if there is anything about me you decide
not to erase, I wish it's this.

Na inquietação da tua ausência,
o universo me ocupa
com perguntas
cujas respostas
não encontrarei sozinha.

Nos dias vazios e dormentes
todo mundo de repente tem
o teu nome -

um jogador de futebol
no jornal da noite,
um garoto malcriado
no supermercado,
um homem que
conserta guarda-chuvas
no centro da cidade.

Mas ninguém tem
o teu gosto,
ou o teu timbre,
ou o teu sossego.

In the uneasiness of
your absence
the universe keeps me busy
with questions whose answers
I won't find by myself.

In the empty,
numb days,
everybody suddenly
has your name -

a soccer player in the ten o'clock news,
a kid throwing a tantrum in the supermarket,
a man who can fix umbrellas downtown.

But nobody has your taste,
or your timber,
or your quietude.

Precisei não pensar.

Precisei escapar do meu corpo
em silêncio e,
invisível,
me assistir de um outro lugar
cinco ou seis passos atrás de nós

e assistir você.

Precisei segurar o fôlego
com o mesmo carinho com que
seguraria a tua mão

e segurar o choro.

Às vezes,
dentro da minha cabeça,
eu flutuo
querendo ser mais como
um homem que vi num quadro
certa vez.

Eu não sou nada.

Mas encontro conforto
na ideia de que
ser não é fixo.

it required a lot of unthinking.

it required escaping my body invisible
and watching myself
from another place
five or six steps behind us
in total silence

and watching you.

it required holding my breathing
as dearly as I would hold your hand

and holding tears.

sometimes,
in my mind,
i float weighless
wishing to be more like
a man i saw on a painting once.

i am nothing.

but i find some comfort
in the thought that
being is not fixed.

Me invento uma dor
pra te escrever uma rima

ou caminho insistente
pelos teus significados?

O que somos não há,
mas amo-te no olho do furacão,

teus monstros não me assustam,
Eu não vou perdê-lo.

Do I invent myself a pain
to write you a rhyming verse

or should I insist in the walk
along your meanings?

What we are is never going to be,
still, I love you in the eye of the tornado,

your monsters do not scare me,
I am not going to lose you.

Aprendo você
com as mãos para trás,
devagar,

no escuro,
ouvindo a sua respiração,
em longas conversas
com os teus fantasmas.

Alheio às terríveis complicações
de ser duro,
mantém as pessoas longe
cercando-se de silêncios
e muros.

Mas uma vez você segurou a minha mão,
uma vez amarrou o meu cadarço,
eu sei que você tem um coração.

Eu o vi uma vez,
por trinta segundos.

I learn you without my hands,
I learn you in the dark,
by listening to your breathing,
by making friends with your ghosts.

Unaware of
the terrible complications
of being tough,
you surround
yourself with silence and walls.

But once you held my hand,
once you tied my shoelaces,
I know you have a heart.

I've seen it
once,
 for thirty seconds.

Noite passada sonhei
que nunca nos falamos.

Éramos apenas duas pessoas
seguindo seus caminhos.

Teus olhos perderam os
meus e tive tanto medo.

A vida nunca pareceu
tão triste e vazia.

last night I had a dream
we never spoke.

we were just random people
on our ways somewhere.

your eyes missed mine,
I was so scared.

life never looked
so dull and sad.

Das tentativas mal sucedidas de me escrever uma história de amor | On my unsuccessful attempts to write myself a love story

Eu tentei outras vezes.
Mas tenho mãos pequenas.

Não posso manipular a luz.
Não posso carregar o mundo.
Não posso tocar as estrelas.

Acredite, eu tentei.

I've tried it before.
But I have small hands.

I can't handle light.
I can't carry the world.
I can't reach for stars.

Believe me, I've tried.

Ficar acordada na cama
com pensamentos que
nenhuma moeda pode comprar.

Protegê-los do tempo
que habita a escuridão
e espia

a minha mente
através de uma fresta
nos dias.

Ele vai roubá-lo de mim,
o tempo.
Virá quando eu estiver

muito triste ou
cansada demais
para lutar contra

o estado de ser
nada além de
uma memória perdida.

to lie awake in bed
with thoughts of you
no penny could buy

to guard them from
time which dwells
in the dark and spies

on my mind through
a crevice in the days.
it will steal you from me,

time. it will come
when I'm the saddest
and too tired to fight off -

the state of being
nothing but a
lost memory.

O caos que habita em mim
saúda o caos que habita em você.

Não sei aonde estamos indo
mas sei de onde viemos -

de universos solitários parecidos,
crescemos desordenados,
tornamo-nos impossíveis juntos,

ainda assim,
só o teu abraço cala os meus medos.

Chaos within me
honors chaos within you.

I don't know where we're going,
but I know where we come from

- we come from similar lonely universes,
which grew straggly, making us impossible together,

still, it's only when you hold me close to your heart
I forget about my fears.

Vou enterrar as últimas palavras
sobre você em algum lugar
às margens do Sena.

Entre todas as histórias
contadas pelas esquinas de Paris
talvez alguém encontre a nossa.

Se o dia não estiver
muito frio para uma caminhada.
Se não for muito tarde.

I'm gonna bury the last
word about you somewhere
in the banks of the river Seine.

Amongst all the stories
told by Parisian corners
someone might find ours,

if it's not too cold a day
for an enjoyable walk.
Or too late.

Escrevo para ficar em paz
com a minha consciência.

Daqui a quinze anos,
quando olhar para trás,

quero ser capaz de sorrir
e saber em meu coração

que te quis na minha vida
mais do que qualquer outra coisa

e lutei por isso.

I write to be at peace with my conscience.
Fifteen years from now, when I look back,
I want to be able to smile and know in my
heart I wanted you in my life more than
anything else and I fought for you.

Eu sei que você vem
quando adormeço.
Escolho não ver.

Ultimamente parece
mais fácil cavar abismos
do que amar.

Quando espero a coragem do contrário,
vem sem roubar-me os silêncios,
sem modificar-me os espaços

e parte antes de querer ficar.
Inúmeras vezes no último ano
tive vontade de lhe dizer isso:

Meu coração não procura substitutos.

É você a minha paz,
e vive no pouco que gostaria
de abraçar depois do fim.

I know you come
when I'm half asleep.

I choose not to see.

these days it's easier
to dig an abyss

than to love.

Whenever I expect rebellious courage
you come and leave me unaltered with my silences

you come and leave me with these spaces.

You part before you feel like staying.
In many occasions last year, I wanted to tell you this:

my heart never looked for replacement.

you are my peace.
you dwell among the few things

I wish I could embrace after the end.
